Cam FAI is characterized by a non-spherical head that shears itself into the socket causing damage to the labrum and adjacent cartilage. It can be difficult to diagnose FAI using plain film radiographs since the subtlest deformities are often missed. Further, it is not uncommon for unrelated procedures to be performed on misdiagnosed patients [2,3]. Currently, cam FAI is corrected by removing abnormal bone without a-priori knowledge of the spatial location and magnitude of the deformity. Improved methods that incorporate 3D hip morphology to locate the deformity could clarify the best surgical approach. The objectives of this study were to develop a preoperative 3D modeling protocol for cam FAI patients and to statistically compare femoral head morphologies between cam patients and normal controls.

Three-dimensional computed tomography of the hip in the assessment of femoroacetabular impingement.
Femoroacetabular impingement secondary to the cam effect is thought to be associated with an insufficient anterior concavity in the sagittal/axial plane of the femoral head-neck junction. Using three-dimensional computed tomography the anterior and posterior concavity of the femoral head-neck junction was assessed in 36 painful non-dysplastic hips (30 patients). The mean age of the symptomatic ...

A CT-based method ("HipMotion") for the noninvasive three-dimensional assessment of femoroacetabular impingement (FAI) was developed, validated, and applied in a clinical pilot study. The method allows for the anatomically based calculation of hip range of motion (ROM), the exact location of the impingement zone, and the simulation of quantified surgical maneuvers for FAI. The accuracy of HipMo...

متن کاملRange of motion in femoroacetabular impingement.
Recent epidemiological studies have demonstrated that radiographic features specific to femoroacetabular impingement appear far more frequently in healthy and asymptomatic cohorts than previously anticipated. It remains unclear how incidental findings should be interpreted clinically. In addition, several authors have suggested that a decreased range of motion is part of the clinical presentati...
